Mercedes-Benz is making a significant stride in enhancing the charging experience for its electric vehicle (BEV) customers in North America. Starting February 2025, drivers of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles in the United States will gain access to Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network, encompassing over 20,000 chargers across the US and Canada. Canadian drivers will follow later in 2025. This strategic move will be facilitated through the Mercedes me Charge service, ensuring seamless “Plug & Charge” functionality at Tesla Supercharger locations. To further ease the transition, Mercedes-Benz will offer a NACS to CCS1 adapter for current EV models and will integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports into its new EV lineup starting in 2025.
This announcement from Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) marks a pivotal expansion of public charging options for its growing electric vehicle customer base. The integration of the Tesla Supercharger network into the Mercedes me Charge service represents Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing dedication to building a comprehensive and user-friendly charging ecosystem. The aim is to provide Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle owners with fast, convenient, and hassle-free charging solutions, regardless of their location or charging preference.
Dimitris Psillakis, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, emphasized the importance of this development: “As our portfolio of cutting-edge, all-electric vehicles continues to expand, we understand that easy access to a widespread charging network is crucial for a smooth ownership experience. Adopting the NACS standard and opening up the Tesla Supercharger network to our customers is a vital step as we strengthen our foundation for introducing more groundbreaking electric vehicles to the market. Together with our valued dealer partners, we are dedicated to reshaping the future of mobility and setting new benchmarks in the luxury automotive sector.”
Streamlining the EV Charging Experience with Tesla Superchargers
The integration of the Tesla Supercharger network into Mercedes me Charge significantly enhances Mercedes-Benz’s already robust charging service. Mercedes me Charge currently provides access to a multitude of charging networks, including Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, IONNA, Electrify America, EVGo, and ChargePoint.
Franz Reiner, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG, highlighted the customer-centric approach: “By granting our customers access to Tesla Superchargers in North America, we are reinforcing our commitment to offering the widest possible range of charging options. The rapidly expanding charging points available through Mercedes me Charge will now exceed 110,000 across the United States and Canada. This expansion positions Mercedes-Benz drivers to enjoy an industry-leading charging experience, anytime and anywhere they need to charge.”
Mercedes-Benz BEV owners will benefit from the convenience of “Plug & Charge” at Tesla Superchargers. This feature simplifies the charging process by automatically initiating the charging session as soon as the vehicle is plugged in and managing payments seamlessly in the background upon completion. To ensure smooth “Plug & Charge” operation at Tesla Superchargers, a complimentary software update will be provided by authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships for all compatible vehicles. Affected customers will be contacted directly to schedule their update. Alternatively, charging can also be initiated via the Mercedes-Benz app or the intuitive MBUX infotainment system.
Tesla Superchargers will be incorporated into Mercedes-Benz’s “Navigation with Electric Intelligence” system. This intelligent navigation feature optimizes routes by guiding drivers to the most efficient paths, including transparently integrating necessary charging stops and calculating charging durations. Furthermore, Mercedes me Charge offers real-time information on charger locations, availability, status, and pricing for all charging points within the network, accessible through both the Mercedes-Benz app and the MBUX infotainment system.
Adapter Solution for Current Mercedes-Benz EV Owners
Recognizing the needs of existing Mercedes-Benz EV drivers with CCS1-compatible charging ports, Mercedes-Benz will introduce a Mercedes-Benz-approved NACS to CCS1 DC fast charging adapter. This adapter will enable current Mercedes-Benz EVs to utilize Tesla Superchargers. The adapter will be available for purchase at authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the United States in Q1 2025 for $185, and in Canadian dealerships in Q2 2025, with Canadian pricing to be announced closer to the launch date. Customers will be informed when the adapters become available for purchase. It is important to note that this NACS to CCS1 adapter is the only adapter that has been rigorously tested and certified by Mercedes-Benz for safety and full compatibility with all Mercedes-Benz BEVs and any NACS DC fast charging station.
Future-Proofing with Native NACS Integration
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz is committed to long-term compatibility with the NACS standard. Starting in 2025, Mercedes-Benz will begin to equip its new electric vehicle models in North America with native NACS ports. This integration will eliminate the need for an adapter for future Mercedes-Benz EVs when charging at NACS-equipped stations, further enhancing the convenience of charging for Mercedes-Benz customers.
Mercedes-Benz’s Holistic EV Charging Ecosystem
The adoption of NACS and the inclusion of the Tesla Supercharger network in Mercedes me Charge are the latest advancements in Mercedes-Benz’s comprehensive approach to EV charging. In November 2023, Mercedes-Benz launched its High-Power Charging network in North America, aiming to elevate the public charging experience for all EV drivers. These Mercedes-Benz-branded 400kW chargers are being deployed across key states, with expansion plans to reach half of US states by 2026. Moreover, the IONNA joint venture, involving Mercedes-Benz and seven other major automakers, is set to launch its first charging stations this year, paving the way for a network of 30,000 high-power charging points across North America, contributing significantly to broader EV adoption.
