The son of Teresa (Drenkow) Pomrenke and Kenny Benz, Rick’s life, though shorter than many would have wished, was filled with vibrant experiences and deep connections. Growing up in Sibley, Iowa, Rick was deeply involved in his community and school. He attended Sibley-Ocheyedan schools, graduating in 2004. During his formative years, Rick actively participated in extracurricular activities, showcasing his athletic spirit and community engagement. He played football and golf, demonstrating his teamwork and competitive nature. His involvement extended beyond sports, as he also contributed to the basketball program and was an active member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America), indicating his diverse interests and willingness to contribute across different areas.
Higher Education and Career in Ames, Iowa
Following his graduation from Sibley-Ocheyedan, Rick pursued higher education in Ames, Iowa, attending Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). He was proud of his academic achievements, having earned three Associate degrees and two diplomas in business, retail, and sales. This accomplishment highlighted his dedication to learning and his ambition to build a career in the business world.
Ames became Rick’s adopted home, where he established his professional life and built lasting friendships. He began his career at Jiffy Lube in 2005, starting as a courtesy technician and quickly advancing to the position of first assistant manager. His tenure at Jiffy Lube was marked by positive relationships and a strong work ethic. In addition to his role at Jiffy Lube, Rick also held part-time positions, including at Outlaws and later at Es Tas Sports Bar and Grill. These roles further embedded him in the Ames community and allowed him to connect with a wide circle of people.
Passions and Personality
Rick was known for his infectious enthusiasm and zest for life. A passionate sports fan, he particularly loved Notre Dame sports, creating a “Notre Dame for Life” text group with family to share the excitement of game days. His loyalty extended to Minnesota professional teams, avidly following the Minnesota Twins baseball and the Minnesota Vikings football. He rarely missed a Twins game, showcasing his dedication and love for the sport.
Beyond sports fandom, Rick enjoyed an active social life and pursued various hobbies. Golf and bowling league were regular activities, reflecting his love for friendly competition and camaraderie. He also enjoyed playing cards and participating in fantasy football leagues, further illustrating his sociable nature and love for engaging with friends.
Patriotism was a core value for Rick. He deeply loved his country and held a strong sense of national pride. Described as having a “Go Big or Go Home” attitude, Rick approached life with boldness and energy. His enormous sense of humor and infectious smile and giggle made him a joy to be around. He is survived by his parents, Teresa and Jerry Pomrenke of Milford, IA, and Kenny and Sheila Benz of Melvin, IA; his sisters, Sarah Benz of Milford, IA, and Victoria (Jeremy) Johnson of Kansas City, KS; step-brothers, Mitchell Pomrenke of Yankton, SD, Chris Scharlepp of Rock Valley, IA, and Nate DeVos of Colorado Springs, CO; grandmothers, Shirley Drenkow of Melvin, IA, and Lavonne Pomrenke of Sibley, IA; and numerous other relatives and friends. Rick was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Yvonne Benz, Marvin Drenkow, and George Pomrenke, Jr.
A memorial service to celebrate Rick’s life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th, at the First Lutheran Church in Milford, IA. Due to COVID-19 guidelines at the time, the service was also available online for those unable to attend in person.
