The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R350: A Swanky Family Hauler – Is It the Right Choice for You?

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R350 occupies a unique space in the automotive world. It’s often described as a minivan, but it defies typical minivan conventions, offering a blend of family-friendly practicality with Mercedes-Benz luxury and sophistication. This vehicle is designed to haul your family in comfort and style, boasting utilitarian features while pampering you like a true luxury car. While mostly brilliant, let’s delve into what makes the R350 a compelling, if unconventional, choice for families. The front-end redesign in 2011 gave it a sharper, more modern appearance, moving away from the less stylish, older look.

One of the key strengths of the Mercedes-Benz R350 is its capacity to comfortably transport a large number of passengers. The test model reviewed featured seating for six with comfortable captain’s chairs in the second row, and a seven-passenger option with a bench seat in the middle row was also available. Impressively, regardless of the seating configuration, the R350 offers four sets of LATCH connectors for child seats, making it exceptionally family-friendly. Getting in and out of the R350 is surprisingly easy, despite the absence of sliding doors. Instead, it features large rear doors that open exceptionally wide. However, this design necessitates being mindful of parking spaces to avoid accidental door dings to neighboring vehicles, especially if passengers are not cautious when opening doors in tight spots.

While some might wish for the convenience of sliding doors on the R350, incorporating them might push it too far into traditional minivan territory – something Mercedes-Benz seemed keen to avoid. A power sliding door would undoubtedly elevate the R350’s status as the ultimate luxurious and accommodating family vehicle, though perhaps sacrificing some of its distinctive appeal in the process.

From a passenger perspective, particularly for children, the R350 excels. The second-row captain’s chairs provide individual space and comfort. The integrated entertainment system, complete with personal screens and wireless headsets, was a major hit, turning even mundane drives into enjoyable experiences. The dual moonroofs contribute to an airy and open feel throughout the cabin, even for third-row occupants. The light tan interior, contrasted with darker elements like the dash and carpets, enhances the sense of spaciousness. Practicality is also well-addressed with ample storage compartments, cubbies, and cupholders. Heated front seats add an extra touch of luxury for front passengers.

Moving to the driving experience, the R350, with its considerable length of 203 inches, naturally feels substantial on the road. The V6 engine delivers ample power, although it can feel slightly hesitant at times. Steering and braking are competent and reassuring. While its size might initially seem daunting for parking, the R350 proves surprisingly maneuverable, entering and exiting parking spaces with unexpected ease.

A notable point of contention in the R350’s design is the placement of the cruise control stalk, turn signal, and gear shifter on the steering column. The turn signal, positioned at approximately 7 o’clock, can be obscured by the steering wheel. Conversely, the cruise control stalk, located around 10 o’clock, is highly visible, leading to potential accidental cruise control activation when intending to signal. Adjusting to this unconventional layout requires a period of retraining and familiarization.

Considering its starting MSRP of $50,240 and reaching $67,455 as tested with features like a panoramic moonroof, entertainment system, premium stereo, parking assist (Parktronic), blind spot monitoring, and 20” wheels, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R350 sits firmly in the luxury vehicle segment. While the price may seem steep, it reflects the comprehensive list of features and the overall upscale experience it delivers. For families seeking a vehicle that offers more refinement and prestige than a traditional minivan, and have the budget to accommodate it, the R350 presents a compelling option.

Verdict:

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R350 is a unique and luxurious family vehicle that successfully blends minivan practicality with Mercedes-Benz refinement. While it has some quirks, like the control stalk layout, its strengths in passenger comfort, features, and overall driving experience make it a worthwhile consideration for discerning families.
