Mercedes Edwards Theatre at Clark Intermediate Unveils Expanded Backstage in Clovis

The Mercedes Edwards Theatre, a cornerstone of performing arts within the Clovis Unified School District, has undergone a significant transformation with a newly expanded backstage area. This upgrade at Clark Intermediate School marks a pivotal moment for the theatre, adding 7,000 square feet to enhance the theatrical experience for students.

For years, the Mercedes Edwards Theatre (M.E.T.) has served as the primary stage for all Clovis Unified High Schools’ productions. The recent expansion is already generating excitement among students like Sloane Rosa, who recognizes the enhanced opportunities the additional space provides. “As we have more room to work on our show and more ways to enhance, I think that leaves us more room to grow,” Rosa shared, highlighting the direct benefits for student performers.

Previously constrained by limited backstage facilities in the original 1942 building, students faced logistical challenges. Changing costumes meant navigating outside and across hallways to reach classrooms, a disruptive and time-consuming process. However, with the expansion unveiled on Friday by drama students, these challenges are now a thing of the past.

The upgraded Mercedes Edwards Theatre now boasts a 2,000 square foot scene shop and workspace, alongside dedicated dressing rooms, a makeup room, and modern restrooms. This comprehensive backstage overhaul promises a smoother and more professional environment for student productions. “It’s going to run so much smoother. It’s going to be so much more peaceful. There’s going to be more privacy. I’m very excited,” Rosa reiterated, emphasizing the positive impact on the overall backstage atmosphere.

Deputy Superintendent Norm Anderson explained that the funding for this crucial project was secured through Measure A bond dollars. While the expanded backstage remains primarily for student use, Anderson emphasized the broader community benefit. “Really, this is more for our performers and our backstage career technical education students to really create a space where they can do their best work and put on some of the best shows in our community,” Anderson stated, connecting the upgrade to the quality of performances the community enjoys.

Susan Kehler, a retired drama teacher with decades of experience at Clovis High, expressed deep appreciation for the investment in the Mercedes Edwards Theatre. For Kehler, the expansion signifies a validation of the dedication and talent of student actors. “It’s a gift to those of us that came before. It’s a gift for those kids who are here now, and it’s a gift for those incredibly fortunate youngsters that are coming up,” Kehler reflected, underscoring the lasting legacy of this upgrade.

While audience members won’t directly see the backstage improvements, the impact will be evident in the enhanced quality of productions. For those eager to witness the talent fostered at Mercedes Edwards Theatre, Clovis North High School is presenting “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” this Friday and Saturday.
