After several European adventures relying on public transportation, including memorable trips to Spain in 2022 and the Netherlands in 2023, we decided to embrace the freedom of the open road. Inspired by fellow travel enthusiasts and their Austrian explorations, we planned a road trip through the heart of Europe, choosing the spacious and reliable Mercedes Benz Vito Tourer as our trusty companion.
Securing our visas early in the year, we meticulously crafted an itinerary, booked charming accommodations, and arranged flights, all in anticipation of our self-planned adventure. Vienna was strategically chosen as our arrival and departure point, primarily due to more favorable car rental rates. Opting for a pick-up and drop-off at Vienna Central Railway Station further optimized our budget compared to airport rentals.
Traveling as a group of five, the need for a comfortable and capacious vehicle was paramount, especially with luggage in tow. Sixt car rental emerged as the ideal choice, being the only agency offering the 9-seater Mercedes Vito Tourer, or a similar model. While the luxurious V Class was tempting, the Vito Tourer presented itself as a more economical yet equally practical solution, proving to be an excellent alternative at half the price.
With our vehicle secured, we shifted our focus to accommodation, seeking out apartments and holiday homes nestled in the Austrian countryside, enhancing our immersion in the local landscapes. Prior to departure, obtaining an International Driving Permit from WIAA in Mumbai ensured we were fully prepared for driving in Europe.
Touching down in Vienna on July 18th, we swiftly navigated immigration and utilized the efficient public transport to reach our hotel conveniently located near Vienna Central Station. The remainder of the arrival day was dedicated to settling in and preparing for the adventures that lay ahead.

Day 1: Vienna to Tauplitz – Picking Up Our Mercedes Vito Tourer

However, the reliable Mercedes Vito Tourer was ready and waiting for us. This spacious van featured comfortable fabric seats and seamlessly integrated Apple CarPlay into its infotainment system, enhancing both comfort and connectivity for our journey. A thorough inspection of the vehicle ensured all existing scratches and dents were accurately documented in the rental agreement, providing peace of mind.
