Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 GT: Unleashing Track Performance

Following passionate requests from its exclusive SLR. CLUB members, Mercedes-Benz commissioned British motorsport specialists RML Group (Ray Mallock Ltd) to create the ultimate track machine: the SLR 722 GT. This purist, racetrack-only super-sports car, devoid of road legality, was engineered to dominate the SLR. CLUB Trophy, a dedicated racing series within the SLR. CLUB’s European track program.

Re-engineered for Racetrack Supremacy

The SLR 722 GT is not merely a modified series-production car; it’s a comprehensive re-engineering project by RML. Focusing on performance enhancements, over 400 components were redesigned, particularly in the suspension, braking system, aerodynamics, interior, and exhaust system. This meticulous approach resulted in a track weapon boasting a kerb weight of just 1390 kilograms and an uprated engine delivering a potent 500 kW/680 PS, fueled by 1.75 bar boost and generating a colossal 830 Newton metres of torque. These figures translate directly to unparalleled racetrack performance.

Visually, the SLR 722 GT makes an immediate statement of intent. Aggressive new bodywork, including a front apron with a splitter, widened wings, pronounced side skirts, a substantial rear diffuser, and a fixed rear spoiler, are clear indicators of its aerodynamic focus and racetrack pedigree. These elements are not just for show; they are the result of extensive aerodynamic development aimed at maximizing downforce and stability at high speeds.

Power and Performance Uprated

Beneath the redesigned bonnet lies a hand-built AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine, further enhanced by RML to produce a formidable peak output of 500 kW/680 PS and the aforementioned 830 Newton metres of torque. A racing air filter and a bespoke exhaust system not only contribute to the power increase but also sharpen engine responsiveness and amplify the car’s already striking auditory presence. By stripping away numerous comfort features, the SLR 722 GT achieves its remarkably low kerb weight, resulting in a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio of 2.0 kg/PS. This translates to blistering acceleration, launching from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.3 seconds and reaching a top speed of 315 km/h.

Track-Focused Chassis and Braking

Lap times are paramount, and the SLR 722 GT’s newly developed suspension is engineered to deliver. A revised wheel location system at both axles enhances kinematics and lateral dynamics, providing superior handling. A modified front stabiliser minimizes body roll during cornering, while adjustable wheel camber and variable compression and rebound shock absorbers allow for precise suspension tuning to suit different racetrack characteristics. 18-inch light-alloy wheels with center locks facilitate rapid tyre changes during races, further aided by a pneumatic jacking system.

Power is managed through a five-speed automatic transmission, adapted for racing with steering wheel shift paddles for immediate gear changes. A mechanical locking differential, with 70 percent locking under acceleration and 80 percent on overrun, ensures optimal traction and power delivery. Braking performance is equally crucial, and the SLR 722 GT features new racing brakes compliant with FIA GT regulations. These brakes offer exceptional fade resistance, improved cooling airflow, and adjustable balance, guaranteeing consistent stopping power lap after lap.

Spartan Racing Interior

The interior of the SLR 722 GT reflects its single-minded purpose: a functional, thoroughbred racing environment. Key features include a robust rollover cage for driver safety, a redesigned instrument panel with a racing display providing essential performance data, a racing steering wheel for enhanced control, and racing bucket seats equipped with six-point seat belts for maximum driver security and support.

Exclusivity and Rarity

RML Group undertook the development, production, and sales of the SLR 722 GT, creating an exceptionally limited run of just 21 vehicles. Servicing and race event participation are also managed by RML in collaboration with the SLR.SAFETY & SPEED ACADEMY. Ownership was exclusive to members of the SLR. CLUB, an elite community presided over by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, then Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The SLR.SAFETY & SPEED ACADEMY offers specialized driver training, including courses to obtain a national Category A racing license, with instruction from renowned drivers like David Coulthard and Klaus Ludwig.

Priced upwards of 750,000 Euros, the Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 GT represents the pinnacle of track-focused performance and exclusivity. While hopes existed for a privateer team to enter it into FIA GT1 competition, its front-engine configuration presented a challenge against mid-engine rivals like the Maserati MC12. Regardless, the SLR 722 GT remains a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to pushing performance boundaries and catering to the most discerning driving enthusiasts.

The first SLR 722 GT, chassis number #1, was notably spotted at a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Germany, captured by forum user HDennis, highlighting the car’s rare public appearances.
