Mercedes Benz S124: A Timeless Classic Wagon Reimagined

Armand Mariano’s journey into the world of automotive passion is a familiar tale for many enthusiasts. It started in childhood, with the simple act of taking apart and rebuilding Matchbox cars, igniting a lifelong fascination with mechanics. This early interest led him to shop classes in high school, where he honed his skills and deepened his love for automobiles. After gaining driving experience with a series of Japanese cars, including Toyotas, a Lexus, and Hondas, Armand discovered his true automotive calling: Mercedes-Benz. For an impressive 23 years, he has dedicated his career to the brand, initially at an independent Mercedes shop and currently at Mercedes-Benz USA, showcasing his unwavering commitment.

It’s no surprise that Armand’s passion extends to owning a collection of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. When planning a photoshoot, the question wasn’t if he had a Mercedes to feature, but which

Armand acquired this Mercedes Benz S124 wagon approximately three years prior, intending it to be a practical daily driver for commuting and errands. However, like many car enthusiasts, the allure of modification proved irresistible. What began as a daily driver soon evolved into a comprehensive project. The rarity of the S124 wagon body style, especially in such well-maintained condition, made it a compelling canvas for Armand’s vision. After a year of driving the wagon in its original form, the transformation began.

The project started decisively with a full respray. Armand aimed to establish a pristine foundation for his build, entrusting Michael’s Body and Paint with the task. The wagon was refinished in its original and rare factory color, paint code 199 – Black Pearl Metallic. This color is particularly significant as it was often featured on the high-performance AMG Hammer models, adding a touch of exclusivity and heritage to Armand’s S124.

While the Mercedes Benz S124 was undergoing paintwork, Armand collaborated with CommonWealth Motoring in Canada to address the suspension system. He envisioned the wagon with an air suspension setup, achieving a significantly lowered stance. The factory suspension components were not designed for this level of modification, necessitating custom fabrication. CommonWealth Motoring engineered custom rear control arms, front and rear bracketry, and air bag cups to accommodate the new air springs. Silver Project adjustable rear camber arms were also installed, ensuring the desired low ride height and wheel fitment could be achieved. For control and reliability, an Air Lift Performance 3P management system was chosen. This system provides effortless adjustability of ride height and quality directly from the driver’s seat.

Armand noted the challenges involved in implementing air suspension on the S124 chassis. The absence of readily available bolt-on kits meant a more complex and custom approach was required. However, the effort was undoubtedly worthwhile. The air suspension not only dramatically enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the wagon but also improved its usability, allowing for adjustable ride height to navigate various road conditions. To complete the visual transformation, Armand commissioned Jason Mendieta to create a bespoke set of BBS RS wheels. Sized at 17×8.5 inches in the front and 17×9.5 inches in the rear, these wheels perfectly fill the wheel arches and complement the 90s styling of the Mercedes Benz S124. Subtle yet impactful final touches, such as the finely tuned M104 inline-6 engine and a Nardi steering wheel in the interior, complete the build, resulting in a Mercedes Benz S124 wagon that is both timeless and uniquely personalized.
