Mercedes-Benz has strategically partnered with AM General to produce its R-Class luxury vehicles at AM General’s Commercial Assembly Plant in Mishawaka, Indiana. This significant move, announced today, leverages AM General’s state-of-the-art 675,000 square-foot facility and skilled workforce to meet the growing demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the U.S. market. The decision to shift R-Class production from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Mishawaka underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to optimizing its North American manufacturing footprint and responding effectively to evolving consumer preferences.
This multi-year agreement marks a milestone as AM General becomes the first and only contract manufacturing partner for Mercedes-Benz in the United States. For Mishawaka, Indiana, and the surrounding region, this partnership promises substantial economic benefits, including the creation of hundreds of new jobs. AM General is actively preparing its Mishawaka plant for R-Class production, with vehicles expected to begin rolling off the assembly lines this summer.
