Reviving a 1932 Mercedes Benz Kit Car: Expert Repair and Restoration

This 1932 Mercedes Benz Kit Car arrived at our shop with a history of mechanical woes. Based on a 1974 Ford Mustang II chassis and housing a 171cid V-6 engine, this classic replica had frustrated several mechanics before reaching us. The owner, understandably wary, had limited drives to within a mere five miles of home, constantly fearing breakdowns, stalls, or starting failures after each stop. Tasked with resolving these persistent issues, we committed to restoring its reliability and enabling worry-free enjoyment.

Our diagnostic process began with a thorough examination of the engine’s core components. The carburetor was the first point of focus, undergoing a complete rebuild to ensure proper fuel delivery. Next, we addressed the ignition system, replacing the outdated points distributor with a modern, reliable electronic ignition system. A comprehensive engine tune-up followed, optimizing performance and efficiency across the board. Beyond the engine, attention turned to the chassis and running gear. The front steering linkage and suspension were meticulously rebuilt, enhancing handling and ride quality. To revitalize the rear suspension, all worn rubber bushings and pads were replaced, contributing to a smoother, more controlled driving experience.

Addressing emissions and noise concerns, both catalytic converters were replaced, and all exhaust system leaks were meticulously repaired, ensuring compliance and a more pleasant sound. Electrical gremlins were systematically hunted down and resolved, restoring proper function to all gauges and electrical systems. A particularly challenging issue involved belt slippage from the alternator and power steering pump, caused by misalignment. To rectify this, we fabricated custom brackets, precisely aligning both the power steering pump and alternator with the crank and water pump pulleys. This custom solution effectively eliminated belt issues, ensuring consistent operation.

With all repairs completed, the transformation was remarkable. This 1932 Mercedes Benz kit car now runs beautifully, delivering the reliable and enjoyable driving experience its owner had long sought. No longer confined to short, anxious trips, the owner now confidently enjoys weekend drives and proudly showcases his revitalized classic at car shows throughout the Hudson Valley, earning trophies and admiration wherever he goes. We take immense pride in having returned the joy of ownership and open-road freedom to this classic mercedes benz kit car enthusiast.
