Even in the fast-paced world of automotive design where concept cars frequently emerge and fade, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo remains remarkably alluring. Unveiled in 2013 as a virtual car for the Gran Turismo 6 video game, this futuristic concept took its cues from one of Mercedes-Benz’s most celebrated vehicles: the iconic 300 SL race car. Recently, the Vision Gran Turismo has resurfaced in detailed videos, reigniting appreciation for its exceptional design and features.
From its sensuously curved, low-slung body, complete with iconic gullwing doors, to its distinctive eight-pipe exhaust system, the Mercedes-Benz Vision Gran Turismo is undeniably a spectacular concept vehicle. It’s a design that captures the imagination, even evoking comparisons to something Bruce Wayne might drive. The cabin is equally striking, featuring air vents cleverly designed to echo the appearance of the external exhaust pipes, a unique touch that further distinguishes the Vision Gran Turismo.
Despite its enthusiastic reception, Mercedes-Benz never intended for the Vision Gran Turismo to enter full-scale production. However, shortly after its debut, rumors circulated about a coachbuilder planning a limited run of five vehicles, utilizing the SLS AMG GT as a foundation. This ambitious project, aiming for a price tag of $1.5 million per car, promised a full carbon fiber body, but unfortunately, no further updates on this endeavor have emerged since.
Mercedes-Benz envisioned the Mercedes Benz Gran Turismo Vision with a potent AMG biturbo V8 engine, generating 585 horsepower (430 kilowatts) and a substantial 800 Newton-meters (590 pound-feet) of torque. This power was to be managed by a seven-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to its lightweight aluminum spaceframe and carbon fiber components, the car boasted a trim weight of just 1,385 kilograms (3,053 pounds), ensuring exhilarating performance to match its stunning aesthetics.
The Vision Gran Turismo paved the way for a series of subsequent Vision concepts from Mercedes-Benz. These included the compact 2014 Vision G-Code, the futuristic 2015 Vision Tokyo emphasizing urban mobility, the opulent 2016 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 coupe, the innovative 2016 Vision Van for urban delivery solutions, and the elegant 2017 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. Among this impressive lineage of visionary designs, the Mercedes Benz Gran Turismo Vision remains a standout favorite for many, exemplifying a unique blend of heritage and futuristic innovation.
