2016 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG: Unleashing the Beast Within a Luxury Sedan

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has long strived to be many things to many people – a vehicle that embodies aspiration, affordability, luxury, and sportiness. However, achieving all these facets equally in a single model is a tall order. Mercedes-Benz has smartly evolved, now channeling specific “C” models towards distinct objectives. When the choice came to select a C-Class for rigorous testing, the decision was clear and emphatic: enter the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63.

In an era where discerning genuine AMG models from their less potent counterparts is becoming increasingly challenging, rest assured, the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63, particularly the C63 S sedan we evaluated, is unequivocally the real McCoy.

The first undeniable clue? Ignite the engine. The roar of its 8 cylinders erupting into life is an instant mood elevator. This visceral auditory experience is something the turbocharged six-cylinder engines favored by competitors simply cannot replicate.

However, let’s clarify – the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 isn’t averse to forced induction. Its formidable 4.0-liter V8 engine is indeed twin-turbocharged, housing two turbochargers nestled within the V configuration of its aluminum block. In the C63 S variant, this powerplant delivers a staggering 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

From this point onward, the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 adheres to the expected AMG performance blueprint: a rapid-shifting 7-speed MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology) transmission channeling power to the rear wheels.

The suspension system is meticulously engineered for performance. The 4-link front suspension is recalibrated for sharper response, as is the multi-link rear setup. Furthermore, the electronic control systems governing the suspension dynamics are also refined to AMG specifications. A key differentiator in the C63 S is the inclusion of an electronically locking rear differential, replacing the mechanical limited-slip differential in the standard C63. This electronic differential allows for quicker lockup and seamless integration with the stability control system, enhancing both track prowess and everyday handling.

AMG Dynamic Select drive modes offer a spectrum of driving experiences, adjusting various vehicle parameters system-wide. The C63 S model exclusively gains a “Race” mode, tailored for ultimate track performance.

Putting the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S through its paces at Savannah’s challenging Roebling Road Raceway revealed its true character as a formidable track weapon.

The steering system provides exceptional feedback, feeling light and agile when needed, yet firm and communicative during spirited driving. Body roll is remarkably contained, even under hard cornering.

The engine’s power is simply immense, delivering over 500 lb-ft of torque. The throttle response is incredibly sharp, demanding a measured approach, especially with rear-wheel drive and no all-wheel-drive assistance to manage traction. Precise throttle inputs are crucial to maximize thrust while maintaining composure and avoiding intervention from the traction control system as the car claws its way out of corners.

We noted some inconsistency in the electronic intervention; at times, it seemed overly eager to engage, while at other moments, it allowed for a surprisingly high degree of slip. Consequently, launches, whether utilizing the sometimes-fickle Race Start function or not, are not as brutally aggressive as one might anticipate. However, the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S still launches efficiently, achieving 0-60 mph in a swift 4.1 seconds.

Once underway, the power delivery is like a tidal wave, propelling you down the track with relentless force. Gear changes are executed with precision and lightning speed, contributing to a blistering quarter-mile time of 12.4 seconds at 115 mph.

The braking performance, however, proved to be somewhat less impressive during our rigorous track testing. We experienced noticeable brake fade, and feedback through the pedal was not as communicative as desired.

With the car brought to a standstill, we can now fully appreciate the visual enhancements bestowed upon the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S. These include a distinctive front fascia, widened fenders to accommodate the 19-inch AMG wheels, a uniquely sculpted hood, and of course, a rear spoiler and diffuser designed to optimize airflow and downforce.

The interior of the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S is a captivating space. The red and black color scheme creates an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and overtly sporty. The materials throughout the cabin are of the highest caliber, featuring genuine metal and wood trim, along with some of the most visually striking carbon fiber accents we’ve encountered.

The base price of $66,175 for the C63 and $74,175 for the C63 S may initially appear substantial. However, these figures are in line with its direct rivals and represent compelling value for genuine AMG performance vehicles.

In conclusion, despite the undeniable refinement of the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63, it retains a character that leans more towards a traditional muscle car than a merely enhanced C-Class sport sedan. For those seeking the authentic AMG experience, this raw, visceral nature is precisely what makes the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 so appealing and rewarding. It’s a symphony of power, sound, and engaging dynamics that resonates deeply with driving enthusiasts.
