Enthusiasts have long been captivated by the iconic Gullwing doors synonymous with Mercedes-Benz, even before the celebrated SLS model. Decades prior, in the vibrant automotive landscape of the early 1980s, German tuning houses sought to capture this spirit. Styling-Garage first presented its vision with the C126-based 500SGS Gullwing. Later, towards the close of the 1980s, Hartmut Boschert embarked on a similar ambitious project, using the then-newly launched C124 as his canvas, resulting in the remarkable Mercedes-Benz B300.
The Boschert B300, a distinctive interpretation of the gullwing concept, started its life as a Mercedes-Benz 300 CE. Boschert’s team undertook significant structural modifications to bring his vision to life. The front end was skillfully replaced with components from the R129-generation SL, seamlessly integrating a more modern aesthetic. Crucially, the C-pillar was repositioned, moved forward by approximately 25 centimeters, and the sills were substantially strengthened to accommodate the dramatic 1.66-meter-wide gullwing doors. These impressive doors provided access to both the front and rear seats, enhancing both the visual drama and practicality of the vehicle. Inside, the front seats were also adopted from the luxurious R129 SL, elevating the cabin experience. To match the striking visuals, the engine received a performance boost with the addition of twin turbochargers, pushing the power output to an impressive 283 horsepower.
The Mercedes-Benz B300 made its grand debut at the 1989 Frankfurt International Motor Show, capturing attention with its innovative design and exclusivity. Priced at DM 186,000, Boschert initially aimed for a limited production run of 300 units. However, due to the complexity and bespoke nature of the modifications, only a very small number were ever produced. The specific example detailed here is particularly unique, being the sole B300 model ever fitted with the signature gullwing doors, making it an exceptionally rare find for collectors. Originally finished in Astral Silver with a black interior when it was a Mercedes-Benz 300 CE, this particular car underwent a stylish transformation in 1990, being refinished in Bornite, complemented by a distinctive two-tone purple leather interior. Acquired by its current owner in 2005, it has been meticulously maintained under his custodianship ever since. Accompanying the Boschert are a collection of original parts and accessories, including a classic wooden steering wheel, a period-correct in-car phone, and a protective car cover. Furthermore, a valuable archive of period sales and development materials, brochures, periodicals, and VHS videotapes provides a fascinating insight into the car’s history and development.
Demonstrating ongoing care and attention, in 2023, this Mercedes-Benz B300 Gullwing benefited from significant maintenance and refurbishment work. This included €16,216 of repairs at CarSystems, €7,783 dedicated to paintwork at Lackprofis Kuennen, and a further €4,771 for leather repairs and recoloring expertly carried out by Auto Leder Toczek. Detailed invoices for this recent work are available, providing transparency and reassurance to prospective buyers.
The Boschert B300 ‘Gullwing’ stands as a genuine one-of-a-kind creation. It represents a high point of Mercedes-Benz-based specials from its era, skillfully blending iconic design elements with enhanced performance and exclusivity, making it a true collector’s gem.
