Our Story: A Legacy of Floral Passion in Austin
The story of Mercedes Flowers began long ago with a woman named Mercedes Gaytan Cortazar, whose talent for floral design blossomed into a passion. She started creating beautiful arrangements for friends and family while raising her three children. This passion grew, leading Mercedes to establish Florería Mercedes in Chihuahua, Mexico, which quickly became renowned as one of the city’s leading florists.
As her children grew, Mercedes hoped one would inherit her floral legacy. While one daughter pursued poetry, another acting, and the eldest ballet, it seemed the family tradition might end. However, her eldest daughter, also named Mercedes Cortazar, discovered a natural talent for floral artistry, seamlessly stepping into the family business. She opened her own shop, ensuring Mercedes Flowers lived on.
After 35 successful years, Mercedes Gaytan Cortazar retired, passing the torch of her beloved business. For a time, it seemed this might be the end of the Mercedes Flowers story. But in 2011, Mercedes’ third daughter, carrying the family name Mercedes once again, decided to bring this cherished tradition to Austin, Texas. Austin had become home since this third-generation Mercedes studied broadcast journalism at the University of Texas.
Nearly six decades and three generations after Florería Mercedes first opened in Chihuahua, Mexico, the Mercedes Flowers tradition proudly continues in Austin. We are honored to be Austin’s family florist, bringing our legacy of exquisite floral design and exceptional customer service to the heart of Texas.
