Remembering Robert “Bobby” G. Benz (1968-2015)

Robert “Bobby” G. Benz, age 46, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, May 7, 2015, at St. Vincent Hospital. Born on September 1, 1968, in Green Bay, WI, to Judith E. (James) Benz King and the late Gary L. Benz, Bobby was a memorable soul, known for his fun-loving nature, even if he sometimes tested the patience of those around him.

Bobby found joy in music, possessing an impressive memory for song lyrics, especially enjoying artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Elton John. He had a fondness for iconic characters such as Batman, Superman, Darth Vader, Big Bird, and Cookie Monster. Food, particularly KitKats, Snickers, and Three Musketeers candy bars, was another of Bobby’s delights, and he would often sing their advertising jingles. He cherished simple pleasures like long van rides, visits to Bay Beach, Baird’s Creek, Bay Shore Park, and even car washes. Above all, Bobby’s heart was full of love for his siblings.

Twenty-five years prior to his passing, Bobby faced the challenge of losing his eyesight, adding to his existing cognitive disability. Despite this significant change, Bobby demonstrated remarkable resilience, quickly learning to navigate spaces through touch. Throughout his life, he was supported by many compassionate and dedicated caregivers in various residences. His life’s journey was a testament to his spirit. When asked about Jesus, Bobby would simply say, “In my heart.” Now, Bobby is in a better place, free to run and explore the beauty of Heaven, in his own joyful way.

To a spirit that was among the greatest, strongest, and funniest we have ever known: Farewell for now… but in your words, “not today, not today, not today.”

Bobby’s memory will be cherished by his loving mother and siblings: Kenneth “Kenny” Benz, Kurtis “Kurty” (Lisa) Benz, his extraordinary sister Kristine “Krisy” (Randy) Healy, Jason Benz, and Jenny (Matt) Levine. He is also survived by his nephew, Wesley (Cassie) Johnson; nieces, Jullia (Matthew) Hallet and Tara Benz (Chris); great-niece, Ocean Johnson; great-nephew, Axle Hallet; and his soon-to-arrive great-niece, baby-girl Hallet. He also leaves behind a special aunt, Carol James; his maternal grandmother, Doris James of Chesterton, IN; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Bobby was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Robert James; paternal grandparents, Norbert and Delores Benz; and his beloved pets, canines Casper and Marshall, and feline Cleo.

Friends are invited to pay their respects at Blaney Funeral Home, located at 1521 Shawano Ave., on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 7 p.m., officiated by Dcn. Tom Mahoney.

With deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks, Bobby’s family acknowledges the many caregivers, social workers, and family members who have cared for “Bobby,” “BooBoo,” and “Roberto” over the years. Special gratitude is extended to Julie Stoltenow (Brown Co. Case Worker) for her exceptional dedication and compassion, to Dr. Alshahrouri, and to the nurses of the CCU and 9th Floor at St. Vincent Hospital. Though he will be profoundly missed, Bobby will never again face misdiagnosis, mistreatment, misrepresentation, or misunderstanding. In one of Bobby’s signature phrases, “HaHa”!

“The best and most beautiful things cannot be touched, They must be felt in the heart.” For all my life, I will carry Bobby as I did before he was born… under my heart. – Mom

Lastly, the family wishes to express their immense gratitude to their Mom for her unparalleled knowledge, care, and compassion for Bobby throughout his entire life.
