Mercedes GLE Coupé: A Refined Drive, But How Does it Stack Up Against the Benz X6?

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé, built on the MHA platform specifically designed for Mercedes SUVs, boasts a significant 33 percent increase in rigidity over its predecessor, achieved without adding extra weight thanks to extensive use of aluminum. Despite these advancements, the GLE Coupé remains a substantial vehicle, tipping the scales at 2,295kg, a mass that is noticeable on the road.

While neither the GLE Coupé nor its direct competitor, the BMW X6, are conceived as outright sports cars, the GLE Coupé can feel less eager to turn into corners. This sensation is partly attributable to the standard adaptive air suspension, which in its default Comfort mode, prioritizes a plush ride, effectively absorbing bumps and imperfections. This focus on comfort does result in some body roll, particularly on uneven roads, a characteristic inherent to high-riding vehicles. However, the payoff is a remarkably cosseting and refined driving experience, even when equipped with the standard 22-inch wheels.

Handling remains competent, offering ample grip and a sense of security that inspires confidence despite the elevated ride height and noticeable body roll. Yet, it’s fair to say that the GLE Coupé doesn’t particularly engage or excite the driver, even within the context of the SUV segment. The “coupé” designation here seems to lean more towards stylistic flair than a dramatic enhancement of driving dynamics, especially when considering alternatives in the “Benz X6” category.

However, where the GLE Coupé truly excels is in its refinement. The 3.0-litre turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine plays a crucial role in this. The 400 d variant generates 325bhp and a substantial 700Nm of torque. This power output allows the GLE Coupé to achieve a 0-62mph sprint in a brisk 5.7 seconds, impressive for a vehicle of its size and weight. Beyond outright speed, the engine delivers excellent mid-range power and impressive flexibility. Complementing the engine is the seamless nine-speed automatic gearbox. While occasionally it might hold onto gears for a fraction too long, gear changes are exceptionally smooth. The abundance of torque ensures relaxed progress, avoiding aggressive downshifts with every slight press of the accelerator.

In terms of features, the GLE Coupé 400 d is exclusively offered in AMG Line Premium Plus trim, which is generously equipped. When compared to the X6 M Sport, the GLE Coupé boasts standard inclusions such as a Burmester sound system, cooled front seats (in addition to standard heating), keyless operation, a head-up display, acoustic glazing, and the Driving Assistance Package. This comprehensive suite includes semi-autonomous adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-keep assist, cross-traffic alert with braking, and evasive steering assist, further solidifying its position as a luxury leader in the “benz x6” comparison.
