Unveiling the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG P900 Prototype: A Rare Benz DTM Legend

In the early 2000s, AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance division, was at its zenith, consistently delivering some of the most exhilarating sports cars in the world. Following the success of the CL, SL, and S 65 AMG, and the SL and E 55 AMG, AMG unveiled an even more exclusive model: the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG. This model was born from AMG-Mercedes’ dominant performance in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) racing series. Between 2002 and 2003, the AMG-Mercedes team proved unbeatable, victories in these popular German touring car races significantly enhancing the brand’s prestige. After using the CLK type W208, Mercedes and AMG developed the CLK type W209 for DTM racing. In the 2003 season, Bernd Schneider clinched the DTM driver’s title in his CLK DTM AMG, a testament to the team’s dominance, winning 9 out of 10 races that season. This success paved the way for a road-going version of the AMG race car, an idea that immediately captivated the entire team. Official drivers clocked over 30,000 km in testing, both on public roads and race tracks, to fine-tune this new silver arrow: the Mercedes CLK DTM AMG. A collector’s item from its inception, the CLK DTM AMG was produced in a limited, numbered series of 100 coupes, with a price tag of €243,386 in November 2004 (equivalent to approximately €331,300 in 2024). Later, 80 cabriolet versions were also commercialized.

The Ultra-Rare Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG P900 Prototypes

While the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG is well-known among enthusiasts, few are aware of the existence of four even more special CLK AMG Coupé models, known internally as CLK DTM AMG P900. Of these four prototypes, only two are believed to exist today. These prototypes served a crucial purpose: the development of an entirely new engine. While all production CLK DTM AMG models were equipped with the 5.5-liter supercharged V8 (M113 K) – an engine producing an impressive 582 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque – the CLK DTM AMG P900 prototypes were different. They were the testbeds for the new naturally aspirated V8 engine, designated M156. This all-alloy block, with a massive displacement of 6,208 cm3, remarkably weighed only 199 kg. Featuring four camshafts with variable valve timing and 32 valves, it produced around 510 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque. This engine, marketed as a 6.3-liter in homage to the legendary M100 engine of the 300 SE 6.3, debuted in the spring of 2006 under the hood of the E63 AMG, before being implemented across almost the entire AMG range.

A Development Mule Driven by Legends: Chassis n° WDB2093751F002397

The example presented, chassis number WDB2093751F002397, was hand-assembled in 2005 and served as a crucial development mule for the 6.2L V8 M156 engine – AMG’s first fully in-house designed engine. This CLK DTM P900 acted as a test vehicle and a demonstration taxi for AMG’s VIP clients. It was used to showcase the new 6.2-liter V8 to VIPs at race tracks. Notably, AMG factory drivers of the caliber of Jean Alesi, Jamie Green, and Bernd Schneider themselves drove this very car, taking VIP clients around European circuits to experience the power and performance firsthand! This prototype even garnered media attention, featuring in reviews by prominent automotive publications like the renowned British magazine, Evo.

Racing DNA and Prototype Exclusivity

Visually, the P900 prototype bears an even stronger resemblance to the actual DTM race car than the production CLK DTM AMG. This is evident in features like the prominent rear spoiler, Lexan windows, and carbon fiber doors. Compared to the already aggressive production CLK DTM AMG, the P900 showcases generously ventilated front fenders, smaller DTM-style mirrors, carbon fiber front canards, and a unique AMG livery. The interior further emphasizes its racing pedigree, equipped with fire-resistant fabric bucket seats, racing harnesses, a full roll cage, an Alcantara-clad dashboard, a digital display instrument cluster, and a specific racing steering wheel. Based on a standard CLK 500 Avantgarde, this P900 was meticulously constructed to the highest standards. Uncompromising build quality was paramount, as it was intended for presentation to VIP clientele. While based on a production vehicle, the P900 feels closer to a CLK DTM race car, enhanced and refined by AMG, incorporating genuine DTM technology. Its construction evokes the spirit of the DTM cars of the 1980s and 1990s.

From AMG’s Hands to Collector Ownership

This particular P900 remained within AMG’s ownership in Germany for several years, later being displayed at their facilities and various events. The second P900 prototype remains at AMG USA. Neither car was ever officially sold to the public initially. However, this example was eventually acquired by a prominent Mercedes and AMG collector with an extensive car collection. The opportunity to purchase this P900 arose as part of a larger acquisition of several race vehicles. While occasionally used on the track, it has primarily resided within this collection. Having seen minimal use in recent years, it is reported to remain in perfect working and driving condition.

This Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM P900 is an exceptionally unique prototype, arguably one-of-a-kind in its availability. The other known P900 is part of AMG’s own collection, residing in a museum in the United States. This prototype has been driven by motorsport luminaries including Jean Alesi, Klaus Ludwig, Jamie Green, and Bernd Schneider. Presented with its Certificate of Conformity in pre-race configuration, it is theoretically road-legal, although modifications would be necessary for registration. As with any race car, it currently lacks registration documents.

Please note that this car is subject to VAT on the hammer price.
