Since its grand opening on September 10, 2008, the Berlin Mercedes-Benz Arena has marked a phenomenal 15 years as a premier entertainment venue. Operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, the arena has proudly hosted 1,992 events, welcoming over 18.1 million visitors through its doors. This milestone underscores the arena’s significant contribution to Berlin’s cultural and entertainment landscape, providing a stage for both national and international music icons, spectacular shows, and major sporting events.
Ole Hertel, Vice President and Managing Director of Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, reflected on this achievement: “15 years of Mercedes-Benz Arena signifies 15 years filled with remarkable highlights and unforgettable moments. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the artists who have graced our stage, the dedicated concert promoters, our valued partners, the sports teams that have thrilled audiences, the service providers who ensure seamless operations, and, of course, our incredible employees. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in the ongoing success story of the Arena. It’s undeniable that an international city like Berlin needs an event venue of this caliber.”
Looking ahead, Mr. Hertel expressed optimism and commitment: “We remain dedicated to providing the perfect setting for top-tier entertainment experiences in the years to come. The past year has clearly demonstrated the public’s strong desire for unique live events. Despite current and future challenges, we are excited and optimistic about the next 15 years.”
The Mercedes-Benz Arena’s 15-year journey hasn’t been without its challenges, notably the impact of the pandemic which significantly curtailed public events for over two years. However, the lifting of restrictions triggered an unprecedented surge in activity. In the twelve-month period spanning from July 2022 to June 2023, the arena hosted an impressive 192 events, marking its most intensive period of operation to date.
The opening of the Berlin venue 15 years prior was marked by a series of high-profile performances. Metallica ignited the stage on September 12, followed by German music icon Herbert Grönemeyer on September 13, and British rock band Coldplay on September 15. Adding to the celebratory opening weekend, local ice hockey team Eisbären Berlin secured a resounding 11-0 victory in their home debut on September 14. This dynamic opening weekend set the stage for the Mercedes-Benz Arena’s enduring legacy as a leading entertainment destination in Berlin.
