The Enduring Appeal of the 280 Mercedes Pagoda SL

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL “Pagoda” is celebrated for its sophisticated design and undeniable charm. From its introduction in the 1960s, this German two-seater quickly became popular, and its timeless allure continues to make it a highly sought-after classic car for collectors today. The 280 Mercedes represents the culmination of the W113 series, an icon in automotive history.

Introduced initially as the 230 SL in 1963, the W113 Mercedes-Benz roadster was the vision of designer Paul Bracq. It earned the endearing nickname “Pagoda” due to its distinctively shaped, slightly concave, removable hardtop. This innovative feature allowed drivers to enjoy open-air motoring or easily convert to a closed coupe for all-weather comfort. The 280 SL marked the final and most refined iteration of this beloved W113 model. It featured an enhanced 2.8-liter version of the inline-six engine, along with numerous other improvements over its predecessors, making the 280 mercedes the most desirable of the Pagoda series.

The example presented here is a beautifully restored, US-market 280 SL, finished in its original Light Ivory (DB 670 G) exterior color and complemented by a matching Pagoda hardtop. Completed in January 1970 and destined for California, this particular car was well-optioned from the factory. It included single-piece disc wheel covers, tinted glass, a Becker radio, a driver’s side mirror, bumper guards, a rear kinder seat, US instrumentation, power steering, and a floor-mounted automatic transmission. These features enhanced both the usability and appeal of this 280 mercedes.

Originally, the interior was trimmed in a more understated Cognac leather with brown carpets and a beige convertible top. However, it has been tastefully updated with a more vibrant color scheme, now featuring striking red leather, red carpets, and a pristine black cloth top. This 280 SL also boasts a highly desirable and significant upgrade: a factory-type Frigiking air-conditioning system, utilizing a modern compressor for improved efficiency. The car’s rebuilt Becker Europa Grand Prix radio has been upgraded with a Bluetooth module, seamlessly integrated while retaining the correct-type Hirschmann automatic antenna. This blend of classic aesthetics and modern functionality makes this 280 mercedes particularly appealing.

This specific 280 SL remained with its original owner until 2011, before being acquired by its second owner and relocated to Florida. During its time with the second owner, a comprehensive restoration was commissioned with marque specialists, resulting in the exceptional condition the car exhibits today. The current consignor acquired this remarkable 280 mercedes in early 2022.

As a timeless classic, the 280 SL has only grown more desirable over time. This attractive example represents a delightful and accessible entry point into the world of classic Mercedes-Benz ownership. Its enduring style and refined engineering ensure the 280 mercedes “Pagoda” remains a sought-after icon for generations to come.
