Having just taken delivery of our new 2018 Amg Benz GLA45, we’re eager to share our initial impressions. As repeat owners, this marks our third foray into the GLA45 family, following our experiences with the 2015 and 2017 models. After putting 150 kilometers on the odometer, it’s clear that while the 2018 iteration might not be a radical departure, the series of incremental improvements have culminated in a noticeably enhanced vehicle, especially when viewed in contrast to the original 2015 version. The refinements address some of the earlier concerns, such as the somewhat jerky drivetrain and less-than-stellar interior, bringing them up to a level that can now be described as “pretty decent.” This evolution is particularly striking when making a direct comparison to the 2015 model.
One of the most significant advancements we’ve observed, differentiating the 2018 model from both the 2015 and 2017 experiences, is the apparent upgrade to the transmission. While neither our dealership contact nor our connection at MBC could provide specific details on the changes implemented, the subjective improvement is undeniable. It feels as though the gear ratios have been recalibrated, resulting in noticeably quicker shifts. This could be attributed to software enhancements, but regardless of the underlying mechanics, the transmission’s performance in this new model is considerably more fluid. While it still doesn’t quite reach the benchmark set by Porsche’s PDK, it represents a substantial leap forward.
Stepping inside the 2018 AMG Benz, the interior presents a subtle yet appreciable upgrade. Although some vestiges of lower-grade plastics remain, the overall ambiance is a notch above previous years. We opted for the Distronic feature this time around and it has quickly become a favorite, adding a layer of convenience to the driving experience. We haven’t had the opportunity to evaluate the LED headlights in nighttime conditions yet, but it’s worth noting they are not equipped with a bending function.
The core driving dynamics of the 2018 GLA45 remain a strong selling point. The steering response is sharp and communicative, the braking is reliably robust, and the seats provide excellent support. This package delivers all the driving enjoyment one could realistically desire – a characteristic that thankfully remains consistent with the original 2015 model. The improved transmission immediately translates to a more engaging and pleasurable driving experience.
However, not everything is perfect. We still harbor reservations about the OEM Continental 5 tires and would have much preferred the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s for enhanced performance and feel. Furthermore, our opinion of MB’s GLA COMAND infotainment system remains unchanged; we still consider it to be among the least user-friendly systems in the premium automotive sector.
We plan to provide a more comprehensive review in the coming weeks as we accumulate more miles and explore the 2018 AMG Benz GLA45 in greater detail.
