2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 Review: Still a Sweet Spot in the C-Class Lineup?

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has long been a benchmark for luxury sedans, blending performance, comfort, and style in a compelling package. Within the lineup, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 stood out as a particularly intriguing model. But in a market constantly evolving, does the 2015 C400 still hold up as a desirable option? Let’s delve into a comprehensive review to find out.

Exterior Styling: A Mini S-Class?

Mercedes-Benz ushered in a design revolution with this generation of the C-Class, and the 2015 C400 proudly wears this new skin. It’s not an exaggeration to say that at first glance, you might mistake it for its larger sibling, the S-Class. This design language trickled down beautifully, giving the C-Class a more prestigious and mature appearance.

The proportions are undeniably attractive, highlighted by a dramatically short front overhang that lends a sense of athleticism. LED lighting is prevalent throughout, from the distinctive LED daytime running lights that act as “eyebrows” above the headlights, to the main headlights and taillights themselves. The aggressive front fascia is characterized by large air intakes with diamond-mesh inserts and a sporty front spoiler, conveying a sense of performance intent. The optional 18-inch AMG wheels not only look fantastic but also provide a glimpse of the substantial rotors and Mercedes-Benz branded calipers behind them. The 2015 C400 is a head-turner, and its striking aesthetics are a significant part of its appeal.

Interior, Technology, and Convenience: A Step Above

Stepping inside the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 reveals a cabin that’s both fresh and modern. The interior design is characterized by sensuous, flowing shapes, particularly the waterfall design of the center console and the clean, horizontal lines of the dashboard. Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to high-quality materials is evident throughout the cabin. Soft-touch surfaces abound, complemented by brushed aluminum accents and contrast stitching on the dashboard and seats. A standout feature, both visually and aurally, are the exquisitely machined Burmester speaker grilles – arguably the most aesthetically pleasing in the automotive industry.

The heated front seats offer an incredible range of adjustability, including power adjustments for the headrests and knee bolsters. More importantly, they are exceptionally comfortable, providing excellent bolstering and support, making them suitable for both long drives and spirited cornering. The center stack is clean and uncluttered, though the piano black trim, while stylish, is prone to showing dust and fingerprints.

The infotainment screen in the 2015 C400 is truly remarkable, boasting exceptional sharpness and contrast, setting a high benchmark in its class. However, the input methods might be less universally loved. Mercedes-Benz employs a combination of the rotary COMAND controller and a touchpad that also functions as a handwriting input device. While functional, the system can be distracting to use while driving, and some drivers might prefer simpler, more direct controls.

Dual-zone climate control is standard, and the optional dual sunroofs – a large panoramic sunroof for front passengers and a smaller one for the rear – add an airy feel to the cabin. For those who appreciate driver assistance technology, the 2015 C400, especially when optioned with packages like the Intelligent Drive package, is well-equipped. Features include a rearview camera with front and rear parking sensors, DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control with steering assist, active parking assist, blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist, attention assist, cross-traffic alert, and autonomous emergency braking.

Rear Seat Comfort and Space: Adequate for Adults

While the front seats are undoubtedly a highlight, the rear seats of the 2015 C-Class are also comfortable. Rear legroom is generous, but headroom is somewhat limited, especially for taller adults. At 5’10”, headroom is just sufficient. The outboard seats are the most comfortable, as the center passenger has to contend with a significant floor tunnel. Rear passengers are provided with amenities like an ashtray, a 12V charging socket, and adjustable air vents. For families with young children, there are two sets of ISOFIX child seat anchors. However, fitting three child seats across might be a squeeze due to the narrower middle seat.

Storage and Trunk Space: Style Over Practicality

In terms of interior storage, the 2015 C400 offers two cupholders and a covered ashtray in the center console. The armrest bin is relatively small, housing two USB ports. The trunk, however, prioritizes style over ultimate practicality. The sloping roofline impacts trunk height, making it challenging to accommodate taller items like full-size suitcases.

Under the Hood: The Sweetheart Engine

The heart of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, producing 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Fuel economy is rated at 11.1 L/100 km (21 US mpg) in the city and 8.4 L/100 km (28 US mpg) on the highway. Real-world driving can expect figures around 11 L/100 km, depending on driving style.

Driving Experience: Smooth Power and Agile Handling

Starting the 2015 C400 is a refined affair. The engine starts with a muted purr, hinting at the power within. The low, sporty driving position immediately encourages a more engaging driving style. The twin-turbo V6 delivers power in a smooth, turbine-like manner, making the car feel effortlessly quick. It never feels strained, even under hard acceleration.

The C400 offers four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. Sport and Sport+ modes noticeably sharpen the car’s responses, firming up the suspension and making the throttle and transmission more aggressive. In these modes, the 2015 C400 feels surprisingly quick, accompanied by a pleasing, throaty V6 engine note under heavier acceleration. The 7-speed automatic transmission is generally smooth and responsive, holding gears when needed in sportier modes and offering paddle shifters for manual control.

The sport-tuned suspension strikes a good balance between handling and ride comfort. While handling is sharp and responsive with minimal body roll, the ride remains compliant on most surfaces. Larger potholes can be felt, but overall, the ride is comfortable for daily driving. The brakes are powerful and confidence-inspiring, providing strong and consistent stopping power.

The 2015 C400 excels in highway cruising, offering a remarkably smooth and quiet ride, especially at 80-100 km/h. One slightly controversial feature is the steering assist, part of the DISTRONIC system. While it can handle highway driving autonomously, it can feel unnatural and even disconcerting in more congested areas, sometimes applying brakes abruptly if the car drifts slightly in its lane. Many drivers might prefer to disable this feature in everyday driving.

Minor Drawbacks

The steering column area can feel somewhat cluttered with multiple stalks, especially the three on the left side. The cruise control stalk, being hidden from direct view, can be initially confusing to operate. The placement of the volume control on the center console, rather than the more traditional center stack location, might also be a minor ergonomic niggle for some drivers. While overall fit and finish are excellent, some minor rattles from the rear window ledge on rough roads were noted.

Verdict: Still a Compelling Choice?

So, is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 the perfect C-Class model? While perfection is subjective, it certainly occupies a sweet spot within the range. If you desire a genuinely sporty and quick sedan without venturing into the higher price and more extreme performance of a C63 AMG, the C400 is an excellent option. It provides a significant step up in performance from lower C-Class models while maintaining a level of refinement and daily usability.

It’s worth noting that shortly after the 2015 C400, Mercedes-Benz introduced the 2016 C450 AMG Sport (later renamed Mercedes-AMG C43). The C450 offered a further power bump and enhanced performance. However, this also means that you might find attractive deals on a well-maintained 2015 C400 in the used car market. Whether you opt for a 2015 C400 or a newer C450/C43, you’re getting a highly desirable and capable luxury sedan. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 remains a compelling choice for those seeking a balance of luxury, performance, and style in a Mercedes-Benz package.
