Always having had a soft spot for the Mercedes SL, particularly the R129 models, I recently started my search for one to add to my collection. The R129 series, still attractively priced in the current market, led me to set up an eBay alert, casually browsing during coffee breaks. It wasn’t long before I stumbled upon a promising listing – a Mercedes 500SL from 1992, advertised for a quick sale.
This particular 1992 model, essentially the same as the sought-after 1993 Mercedes 500 Sl, boasted the robust M119 engine, a smooth 4-speed automatic transmission, and was finished in Malachite Green with a Champignon interior. With only 68,000 miles on the clock from new, it seemed like a remarkable find. The color combination, green and beige, initially raised an eyebrow, but the photos presented a surprisingly appealing aesthetic. After a quick call to the seller, a pleasant interior designer, I confirmed that everything was in working order. Confident, I promptly paid a deposit via PayPal at the asking price.
Picking up the 500 SL last week, after sorting out a plate change, I’ve only managed a few drives. The performance of this car is truly impressive! Who knew these grand tourers were so quick? The 4-speed gearbox is a joy to use and known for its durability – a quick downshift is all it takes for assertive acceleration. While some might consider its styling a bit conservative, I personally find its well-crafted design very appealing. These cars are exceptionally well put together, and I’m optimistic about seeing a good return on this investment over the next decade or so. My plans include optimizing the intake and exhaust systems, conducting thorough servicing, addressing a few minor trim details, and generally ensuring it’s well cared for. The classic car insurance at just £170 a year is an added bonus! Are there any other R129 SL enthusiasts out there? I’ve already connected with several owners in the past week, and it’s great to share the passion for these iconic vehicles.
